Saint-Jean

Saint-Jean is one of the larger villages on the island, the second largest after Gustavia. It is a commercial centre, with shops and restaurants, and the airport is here. It is a real sight to witness the planes land between the hills, only at the last minute finding the very short runway which ends literally on the beach, giving passengers a first close encounter with the island as they touch down. The beach is nevertheless fairly tranquil and perfect for children and families, due to its calm north coast position. Numerous beach restaurants await, with offerings from a simple salad to a gastronomic lunch by the water. An ideal beach for snorkeling, or just for enjoying a drink on the promenade. A lovely place, clean and with lots of flowers, and with some beautiful villas and luxury hotels on the hillsides around. Take the coastal road towards Lorient for some superb panoramic vistas.
